Packing Engineer – AlSharhan Industries
Job Summary:
Packaging Engineer expected to lead ASI’s packaging sustainability roadmap, identify long-term innovation opportunities, and proactively shape sustainable packaging to drive brand purpose, consumer experience, and environmental goals.
This role requires a strong understanding of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, supply chain dynamics, and regulatory compliance, with a keen eye for consumer experience and cost optimization. The successful candidate will collaborate cross-functionally to bring new products to market efficiently and improve existing packaging for quality, cost, and environmental impact.
1. Packaging Design & Development:
o Lead the sustainability goal of the company by aligning with global standard.
o Watch out for disruptive technology and develop primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components and systems for new and existing FMCG products (e.g.personal care, home care and Aerosol)
o Create detailed technical specifications, engineering drawings (using CAD software like ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks), and prototypes for various packaging formats (e.g., cartons, flexible packaging, bottles, jars, pouches, labels, shippers).
o Conduct feasibility studies to determine the suitability of packaging solutions for specific products, considering factors like product protection, shelf life, consumer convenience, and brand aesthetics.
2. Material Selection & Optimization:
o Evaluate, select, and qualify appropriate packaging materials (plastics, paperboard, glass, metal, flexible films, etc.) based on product requirements, cost-effectiveness, sustainability goals, and manufacturing capabilities.
o Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives through material optimization, design improvements, and process efficiencies without compromising quality or performance.
o Research and integrate sustainable packaging solutions, including recyclable, compostable, reusable, and recycled content materials, in alignment with company sustainability targets and evolving consumer demands. Conduct Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) where applicable.
3. Testing & Validation:
o Develop and execute comprehensive packaging testing protocols (e.g., ISTA, ASTM standards) to ensure structural integrity, product protection, shelf stability, and performance throughout the supply chain (e.g., drop, vibration, compression, climate chamber tests).
o Coordinate and oversee packaging line trials and pilot runs in manufacturing facilities to validate new designs and materials, troubleshoot issues, and optimize production efficiency.
o Analyze test data and trial results, provide clear recommendations, and document findings in reports.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
o Work closely with R&D and collaborate with Marketing, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality Assurance, and external suppliers/vendors to lead the goal of company.
o Translate marketing briefs and consumer insights into functional and aesthetically pleasing packaging solutions.
o Ensure packaging designs are compatible with existing and new manufacturing equipment and processes.
o Collaborate with procurement on supplier selection and material sourcing strategies.
5. Project Management:
o Lead and manage packaging development projects from concept through to commercialization, adhering to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
o Effectively communicate project status, risks, and challenges to stakeholders.
o Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
2. Compliance & Quality:
o Ensure all packaging designs and materials comply with relevant industry standards, food contact regulations, safety guidelines, and country-specific labeling requirements.
o Implement and maintain packaging quality control measures and specifications.
o Conduct root cause analysis for packaging-related issues and implement corrective actions.
3. Continuous Improvement & Innovation:
o Stay abreast of industry trends, new packaging technologies, materials, and machinery.
o Proactively identify opportunities for packaging innovation, efficiency improvements, and waste reduction.
o Contribute to the continuous improvement of packaging processes and methodologies.
o Identify cost-saving opportunities through lightweighting, material substitution, and design improvements.
o Improve supply chain efficiency through optimized pallet patterns and cube utilization.
